Basal Cell Carcinoma \u00a0\u2013 from skin STEM cells<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Invasive basal cell carcinoma arises only from epidermal STEM cells, a new and exciting finding according to a study published in Nature this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0\u00a0\u201ccell of origin\u201d for\u00a0basal cell carcinoma (BCC)<\/a>\u00a0in a mouse model is a stem cell. This is big news. \u00a0Conventional cancer treatment (chemotherapy and radiation) kill only cancer TUMOR cells while making the lethal cancer STEM cells \u00a0\u201cmore numbers and more virulent\u201d. So you need \u00a0to ask your oncologist this question: \u201cDr. please explain to me what your proposed treatment will do to my lethal cancer STEM cells.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

With death, epidermal cells are replaced by cells which renew the skin \u2013 also known as progenitor cells, and these are more determined \u2013 rigidified, AKA differentiated than the stem cells \u2013 their parents. What is new from this study (reference below) is that basal cell cancer arises from both progenitor cells and more significantly, from stem cells.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe consider the identification of the stem cells as the cells of origin of basal cell carcinoma [to be] a key finding, and that the understanding of the cellular dynamics leading to tumor initiation will allow us to better design new treatments for basal cell carcinoma,\u201d reported Dr. Cedric Blanpain, MD, PhD, \u00a0\u2013 co author of the study \u00a0in an email to\u00a0Cancer Therapy Advisor<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Co-author Benjamin Simons, PhD, reported\u00a0\u201cA gradual reduction in the proliferation rate allied with an increase in the apoptosis rate, however, leads to an arrest of progenitor cell-derived lesions in a dysplastic state.\u201c As regards future therapy \u2013 Dr. Simons continues: \u201cWe believe that insights into early diagnosis and novel treatment strategies may be found by targeting the earliest phase of disease initiation and progression.<\/span><\/p>\n

The take home message is that the future of cancer treatment is to address the cancer STEM cells and that safe and effective anti-inflammatory agents<\/a> hold the brightest promise!<\/span><\/p>\n
