cord injury has become the first person to be able to \"feel\" physical sensations through a prosthetic hand directly connected to his brain, and even identify which mechanical finger is being gently touched. a future in which people living with paralyzed or missing limbs will not only be able to manipulate objects by sending signals from their brain to robotic devices, but also be able to sense precisely what those devices are touching. clinical work involved the placement of electrode arrays onto the paralyzed volunteer's sensory cortex-the brain region responsible for identifying tactile sensations such as pressure. <\/span>\u81e8\u5e8a\u52b9\u679c\u306f\u3001\u5727\u529b\u306e\u3088\u3046\u306a\u89e6\u899a\u3092\u78ba\u8a8d\u3059\u308b\u3053\u3068\u306b\u5bfe\u3057\u3066\u8cac\u4efb\u304c\u3042\u308b\u9ebb\u75fa\u3057\u3066\u3044\u308b\u30dc\u30e9\u30f3\u30c6\u30a3\u30a2\u306e\u611f\u899a<span>cortex-the<\/span>\u8133\u9818\u57df\u4e0a\u3078\u3001\u96fb\u6975\u914d\u5217\u306e\u653e\u7f6e\u3092\u542b\u3093\u3060\u3002<span> In addition, the team placed arrays on the volunteer's motor cortex, the part of the brain that directs body movements. <\/span>\u52a0\u3048\u3066\u3001\u30c1\u30fc\u30e0\u306f\u914d\u5217\u3092\u30dc\u30e9\u30f3\u30c6\u30a3\u30a2\u306e\u904b\u52d5\u76ae\u8cea\uff08\u4f53\u904b\u52d5\u3092\u5c0e\u304f\u8133\u306e\u90e8\u5206\uff09\u306b\u914d\u7f6e\u3057\u305f\u3002<\/p>\n<p><span>Wires were run from the arrays on the motor cortex to a mechanical hand developed by the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) at Johns Hopkins University. <\/span>\u5c0e\u7dda\u306f\u3001\u904b\u52d5\u76ae\u8cea\u306e\u914d\u5217\u304b\u3089\u30b8\u30e7\u30f3\u30ba\u30db\u30d7\u30ad\u30f3\u30b9\u5927\u5b66\u3067\u5fdc\u7528\u7269\u7406\u7814\u7a76\u6240\uff08<span>APL<\/span>\uff09\u306b\u3088\u3063\u3066\u767a\u9054\u3059\u308b\u6a5f\u68b0\u306e\u624b\u307e\u3067\u5f35\u308a\u3081\u3050\u3089\u305b\u3089\u308c\u305f\u3002<span> That gave the volunteer-whose identity is being withheld to protect his privacy-the capacity to control the hand's movements with his thoughts, a feat previously accomplished under the DARPA program by another person with similar injuries. breaking new neurotechnological ground, the researchers went on to provide the volunteer a sense of touch. The APL hand contains sophisticated torque sensors that can detect when pressure is being applied to any of its fingers, and can convert those physical \"sensations\" into electrical signals. By wiring a sense of touch from a mechanical hand directly into the brain, this work shows the potential for seamless bio-technological restoration of near-natural function.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The clinical work involved the placement of electrode arrays onto the paralyzed volunteer\u2019s sensory cortex\u2014the brain region responsible for identifying tactile sensations such as pressure. In addition, the team placed arrays on the volunteer\u2019s motor cortex, the part of the brain that directs body movements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wires were run from the arrays on the motor cortex to a mechanical hand developed by the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) at Johns Hopkins University. That gave the volunteer\u2014whose identity is being withheld to protect his privacy\u2014the capacity to control the hand\u2019s movements with his thoughts, a feat previously accomplished under the DARPA program by another person with similar injuries. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Then, breaking new neurotechnological ground, the researchers went on to provide the volunteer a sense of touch. The APL hand contains sophisticated torque sensors that can detect when pressure is being applied to any of its fingers, and can convert those physical \u201csensations\u201d into electrical signals. The team used wires to route those signals to the arrays on the volunteer\u2019s brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the very first set of tests, in which researchers gently touched each of the prosthetic hand\u2019s fingers while the volunteer was blindfolded, he was able to report with nearly 100 percent accuracy which mechanical finger was being touched. The feeling, he reported, was as if his own hand were being touched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAt one point, instead of pressing one finger, the team decided to press two without telling him,\u201d said Sanchez, who oversees the Revolutionizing Prosthetics program. \u201cHe responded in jest asking whether somebody was trying to play a trick on him.
